When choosing the shape of your outdoor kitchen, it's important to consider your cooking and entertaining needs, as well as the size and layout of your outdoor living space.
By choosing the right kitchen layout design, you can create a functional and beautiful outdoor living space that meets all of your needs.
The shape of your outdoor kitchen is an important factor to consider when designing your outdoor living space. There are several popular kitchen shapes to choose from, including straight, galley, L-shape, U-shape and Islands.
Each shape has its own unique advantages, so it's important to consider your needs and preferences when making your decision and of course the area and space you have to work with will often determine the right layout for you.
Straight kitchens are simple and straightforward, with a linear layout that works well in both small and large spaces as they can be designed to be as long as required to fit all the elements you want to achieve for your outdoor kitchen.
Although they can be arranged to be compact, you can often still get all the functionality and appliances you want in a straight run.
Galley kitchens are also a linear design, but with two parallel countertops that create a more efficient workspace. This shape works well for cooking and food prep, but tends to be a working chefs kitchen style with chef and cooking team in the galley area and guests on the other side of the counter.
L-shape kitchens have a corner design that provides more countertop space and storage options. This shape is ideal for larger outdoor living areas and allows for multiple work zones. The L shape also enables a design arrangement where guests can linger in the kitchen space on stools on the other side of the L counter top. This is also a great combination for a bar linked to the kitchen run.
U-shape kitchens are similar to L-shape kitchens, but with a third countertop that creates a more spacious and versatile layout. This shape is ideal for large outdoor living spaces and can accommodate multiple people working in the kitchen. This arrangement lends itself well to a true chefs kitchen, where all appliances and functionality is central around the chefs working area and the guests are the other side of the U shape.
Centre island kitchens, these are our favourite arrangements and produce a very social style kitchen where all the family, hosts and guests can interact and get involved around the action to create a very communal event.
Pair the island with a straight run or an L shape side kitchen to give you a fully functioning outdoor kitchen space with all the cooking, storage and entertaining space you will ever need.
An island provides additional work surface space for food preparation, cooking, and serving; especially helpful when cooking and entertaining for large groups. There tends to be a lot more storage in an island design with cupboards and storage in the island below as well as the main run of the kitchen area to the side.
The island itself can be customized to meet your specific needs, such as incorporating a sink or grill into the main worksurface design. And of course the fun aspect of having an island is that all your guests can join you in the middle of the kitchen giving that feeling of being in the heart of the cooking action, at the chefs table.
